Most people have never heard of the GYROTONIC® Method — and that's exactly why it works.
Developed by former dancer Juliu Horvath, the GYROTONIC® Method is a movement practice built on four core principles of optimal spinal health:
Simple on their own. Nearly infinite in combination — on your back, on your side, standing, seated, with your legs, in the air.
Using specialized equipment — not machines that isolate, but machines that support — the GYROTONIC® Method moves your spine and joints through their full, natural range: no jarring, just continuous, circular movement that mimics how the body actually wants to move.
It's often mistaken for Pilates. It's not. Where Pilates tends to work in linear planes, the GYROTONIC® Method works in three-dimensional, spiraling patterns — closer to how a dancer, a swimmer, or a cat actually moves through space.
Based in Oakland's East Bay, East Bay GYROTONIC is one of the only studios in the area offering private GYROTONIC® Method training.
I've had such a delightfully surprising journey with GYROTONIC®. I am learning how to move in a new way — something I did not think was possible after moving in the same way for over four decades. It feels so very regenerative.
— Khiara B.
This isn't a general fitness class. It's not about burning more calories or pushing harder.
It's for people who want to feel strong, capable, and at home in their bodies — whether you're refining a lifelong movement practice, returning to your body after time away, or simply wanting to move through your everyday life with more ease.
Maybe you want to dance better. Run, swim, or practice yoga with more freedom. Keep doing the things you love as you age. Get out of the car without stiffness. Pick up your child without thinking twice. Or simply feel more comfortable inhabiting your own body.
For those who train intensely, there's another layer. High-level athletes and dancers often over-muscle. We grind. We push through instead of listening. The GYROTONIC® Method creates a space to ask: what actually doesn't need to work right now? That question alone changes everything — it's the difference between training for the next ten years and training for the next ten sessions.
You don't need to already have the language. If you're open and willing, that's enough.
I feel like thinking about the seed center and its support system has done so much for me. It's like rediscovering my core — something I've been trying to find since my first pregnancy.
— Yunjie M.
Courtney Henry has spent over two decades in devoted relationship with movement — as a professional dancer touring internationally with Alonzo King LINES Ballet, a visiting scholar at the university level, school director at Berkeley Ballet, and now a certified GYROTONIC® practitioner based in Oakland.
She discovered the GYROTONIC® Method in 2009 as a summer intensive student, and it never let go. Throughout her professional dance career, it was the practice that let her work efficiently instead of over-muscling — the space where she learned what didn't need to work, so the rest of her body could. She continued the practice through pregnancy, through a season living in Germany, and through her transition out of full-time performing — training and later certifying under Deborah Rose at SF GYROTONIC.
Courtney believes this body is an instrument. And the more aligned the spine, the more alignment becomes possible everywhere else — in your work, your relationships, your sense of ease in your own life. Because when things are stacked, they get to balance. And when there's balance, there's flow.
Her work is high-touch, personalized, and built session by session around the person in front of her — not a program applied to everyone the same way.
You've brought me an increased awareness of the space in my joints and in between my limbs, and a relaxed attitude of easing in and expanding that space. It's been a complete psychological mirror of expansion and relaxation in my everyday life.
— Anne R.
